Syria Blog

Before Obama and the United States government decide to intervene in Syria, there are many questions and issues that must be addressed. President Obama must weigh the benefits of a military intervention in Syria. The United States must consider the possible repercussions of a military invasion of Syria. The United States government officials must ask themselves if a military intervention in Syria will actually solve the issue at hand. Is intervening in Syria worth the possible loss of American soldiers? Will intervening in Syria help bring an end to the use of chemical weapons against innocent civilians? Before acting, the United States must see if there are any other possible routes to solving the problem in Syria without military intervention. Another factor that the United States must consider is Russia's backing of Syria. If the United States can possibly make a settlement with not only Syria but also Russia regarding the issue, there may be fewer consequences. The United States government must consider all of these issues before making any decisions regarding an intervention in Syria. Also, there any many pros and cons regarding an intervention in Syria. One important con of the intervention might be that the United States involvement will only lead to greater resentment of the Syrians against the United States government. Another con could possibly be a great loss of American soldiers without a peace settlement with Syria. A possible pro may be that the United States will stop Syria and end the threat of chemical weapons being used to harm people. Another pro may be that the United States will assert itself as a strong nation that will not stand for any country harming its own civilians through the use of chemical weapons. If the Unites States asserts itself as a strong nation, the United States may persuade other nations not to engage in the use of these destructive and violent weapons. Catholic Social Teaching states in the Just War Theory that all war must have a probable cause and be the last possible resort. President Obama and Pope Francis agree that the use of chemical weapons in Syria must end. However, Pope Francis believes that as Catholics we must try to solve the problem in Syria with a peace settlement. Catholic faith and Tradition regard human life as extremely valuable. As Catholics, we must work to save human lives as well as work towards peace among nations.
